Goodwyn's Week in Cartoons
Happy 4th, The Biden Hangover, John Cusack, Midnight Hammer, UPenn, and Kal Kallaugher
Happy 4th of July. I hope you have an opportunity to celebrate with friends and family, and end the day with the same number of fingers you woke up with.
This week’s Blast from the Past isn’t one of my cartoons. It’s from another cartoonist, drawn for me way back in 2006. This goes with some unfortunate news of his recent firing. Scroll to the bottom for a few details along with links to his incredible work.
Happy 4th
The Biden Hangover
Buckle up, the Democrat Party’s doing a spectacular face-plant into the political abyss, and it’s not exactly a who-coulda-seen-that-coming collapse! This crash and burn comes courtesy of open borders, men dunking on women in sports, a nuclear Iran, “What is a woman, anyway?” and the 20 side of every other 80-20 issue.
Just when you thought the circus couldn’t get wilder, New York City’s ready to crown a pro-socialist mayor ready to fleece the pockets of wealthy New Yorkers until they and their wallets flee to Florida.
Grab your popcorn; we’re about to see the global center of capitalism left with nothing but artisanal kombucha stands and unpaid bills.
Say Anything Stupid…
Give John Cusack a break. When you live in a Hollywood fantasy world your entire life, perhaps reality gets a little blurred. He’s been in over 80 movies beginning in 1983, and sometimes five movies in one year. That’s gotta mess with your head. The movie Identity could do that by itself.
With his latest post where he whines about Iran not getting nuclear weapons, perhaps he’s prepping for the part of a senile man, thinking Iran is an exercise routine, and confused over geopolitical issues. I hear it’s called “I’m Joe Biden, Right?”
Midnight Hammer Crews
A job well done.
UPenn Discovers What’s a Woman
Imagine in a few generations how this particular moment in time will be remembered, particularly for the 90-10 issue of only women in women sports. Hopefully it’s a headscratcher on how it ever came to be otherwise.
Blast from the Past
Some news that portends poorly for editorial cartoonists. Kevin “Kal” Kallaugher, an extraordinary cartoonist, easily one of the best working today… was just fired from The Baltimore Sun.
I’ve chatted with Kal a few times over the years. The first was at a museum exhibit of his work in Baltimore shortly after I moved to the DC area. I found him in the museum cafe and introduced myself. He was very gracious with his time and encouragement, and even drew the cartoon below à la Lloyd Bentsen for me while we talked.
Over the years, I’ve seen what Kal contributes to the editorial cartooning world and it goes well beyond his cartoons. His generosity and ownership for the profession can be seen in his leadership, mentoring, public engagements, and teaching the art of editorial cartooning.
The editorial cartooning world has returned the well deserved favor by recognizing Kal for his talents. He’s won many awards and I’m proud to say that I was present in 2019 when he received the Rex Babin Award for excellence in US local cartooning presented at the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists annual meeting in Columbus, Ohio.
Check out his web page to see the expansive range of his work. You can find out more about the firing in a piece linked here to his Substack page.
You do a wonderful job. I know you are proud of what you have accomplished. Have a good month
Happy 4th man!
